a perspective on PR in social housing and regeneration

Homeless project ‘one to watch’ for 2011

The last story I was involved in this year also has the potential to be one of the best. The HCA announced last week that it is to invest in a fantastic housing scheme which will be dedicated to homeless ex-servicemen and women in Bristol.

The project, delivered by Knightstone Housing Association and the Community Self Build Agency, ticks all the boxes a great story needs.

It is believed to be the first scheme in the country to employ homeless ex-armed forces personnel during the construction phase as well as accommodate them; so it has the ‘wow’ factor.

It highlights a pressing need for housing for this group which deserves media attention, and has generated it in the past. The partners found in their own research that around a quarter of people living in homeless accommodation in Bristol were ex-servicemen.

And it has the potential to deliver the ‘human interest’ material which journalists thrive on, through interviews with the passionate professionals delivering the project and those who are directly benefiting from the housing and employment offered by the scheme.

Hats off to those who have worked so hard this year to get the project to this stage. Some media (quite rightly) picked up on the story before Christmas. It is definitely only a matter of time before it generates more interest.
